Tips for gathering evidence to demonstrate your skills

The important thing to remember when gathering evidence is that the more evidence the better - that is, the more evidence you gather to demonstrate your skills, the more confident an assessor can be that you have learned the skills not just at one point in time, but are continuing to apply and develop those skills (as opposed to just learning for the test!). Furthermore, one piece of evidence that you collect will not usualy demonstrate all the required criteria for a unit of competency, whereas multiple overlapping pieces of evidence will usually do the trick!

TLIB4079A - Conduct a general train examination

What evidence can you provide to prove your understanding of each of the following citeria?

Prepare for a general train examination

  1. Location of examination and information about items to be examined are obtained and activities are planned
  2. Materials, documentation and equipment required for the examination are identified, obtained and prepared for use
  3. Examination is started at planned time and location to minimise delays to train availability
  4. Train identification and status is confirmed and required actions are taken to ensure train remains safe for duration of examination
  5. Individual responsibilities required to complete examination are agreed with relevant personnel
  6. Conditions are assessed and necessary actions are taken to ensure examination is effective

Undertake general train examination

  1. Examination is undertaken in accordance with organisational procedures
  2. Communication is maintained with relevant personnel to ensure safe, efficient and complete examination
  3. Condition of rolling stock, couplings and, if applicable, load are examined and dimensions are confirmed appropriate to wagon type and gauge outline requirements
  4. Irregularities and, if applicable, load contamination are identified and appropriate action is taken in accordance with organisational and/or network owner policies and procedures
  5. Obvious wagon or carriage faults and their locations are reported in accordance with organisational policies and procedures
  6. Apparent problems are investigated further and corrected where possible

Instructions to Assessors

Evidence Guide

The evidence guide provides advice on assessment and must be read in conjunction with the performance criteria, required knowledge and skills, the range statement and the assessment guidelines for this Training Package.

Critical aspects for assessment and evidence required to demonstrate competency in this unit

The evidence required to demonstrate competence in this unit must be relevant to and satisfy all of the requirements of the Elements, Performance Criteria, Required Skills, Required Knowledge and include:

required knowledge and skills

relevant legislation and organisational procedures

other relevant aspects of the range statement.

Context of and specific resources for assessment

Performance is demonstrated consistently over time and in a suitable range of contexts.

Resources for assessment include access to:

a range of relevant exercises, case studies and/or other simulated practical and knowledge assessment, and/or

access to an appropriate range of relevant operational situations in the workplace.

In both real and simulated environments, access is required to:

relevant and appropriate materials and equipment, and

applicable documentation including organisational procedures, regulations, codes of practice and operation manuals.

Method of assessment

As a minimum, assessment of knowledge must be conducted through appropriate written/oral tests.

Practical assessment must occur:

through activities in an appropriately simulated environment, and/or

in an appropriate range of situations in the workplace.
